The name John Pepper is largely lost in Lakeland literary circles. But his ode to Cockley Beck, where he spent six winters engaged in a search for meaning, is a classic of nature writing.
I have a copy of this book and remember it made an impression some years ago. Will read it again. Do hope there is still peace and solitude to be found at Cockley Beck.
Excellent read. I’ve read a lot of the Lakeland classics, from Heart of Lakeland to The Shining Levels, but missed this. I’m adding him to my TBR list immediately.
love the artwork and the tale
Thanks Tony
I have the cover image, used on the book, on my wall … taken by the wonderful photographer David Briggs! It is a long time since I’ve seen his work …
Must find a copy of John Peppers book! Fond memories of this area …
Chris – It is a really evocative image of a fabulous building.
